The Walnut Festival dates back to 1911 when it was a celebration of the harvest of grapes … and was called "The Grape Festival" until Prohibition ended the viability of grapes as the local cash crop. The name was officially changed to the Walnut Festival in 1936 and even though all the walnut orchards have long since been replaced by suburban developments the Festival remains a strong tradition in Walnut Creek.
Since 1976 the Festival has been located at Heather Farm Park starting on the third Thursday after the first Monday in September… (don't ask it seems a bit strange to me too). As the tradition continues it now helps create a focus on fundraising events for the benefit of the community.
